YouTube for Social Change

(A Video Workshop for activists and advocates)

Schedule

 

8 a.m. – Welcome. Doors open. Coffee and Computer set up.

 

8:30 a.m. Video is the 21st Century’s moveable type  - Jim Carrier, WFS founder, samples advocacy videos.

 

9:00 - 10:30 a.m. What’s your Story?/Making the Pitch – Finding the nugget of your advocacy, writing and creating a video PSA that gets attention. Bring your ideas and questions. Jane Bartell of Project Girl and Mike Underwood of Velocity will help you hone your pitch to fundraisers, members and the public.

 

10:45 - 12:15   You Too Can YouTube – You may already have the tools to make a low-cost, high-quality audio slide show or video – a digital camera and laptop.* The course will cover camera and lighting tips, a microphone and audio primer, and simple editing using photos, video and audio clips. Bring a laptop with Windows Movie Maker or Mac iMovie. The class will be lead by Martha Busse and Jim Carrier, WFS board members and photo/audio professionals. (*Note: Instructions for software, including downloading freeware Audacity, will be emailed after registration. )

 

12:30-1:15 Cloud Computing – A working lunch (bring your own) – Creating an office and communications without paper, brochures, or even DVDs. Sony Vice President Dave Hill takes us to the cutting edge.

 

1:30 – 3:30 p.m.  Splicing and Dicing – A hands-on video editing workshop. Bring your PC or Mac laptop. Software*, video and audio clips will be provided. Veteran Sony instructor Sam Fares will lead creation of a one-minute PSA, focusing on story telling, transitions, graphics, audio, timing, etc. (*Instructions for preloading free trial Sony Vegas software for PCs will be emailed after registration. Spanish versions are available. Mac users may use their own iMovie, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro).

 

3:45-5 p.m.  YouTube for Social Change - Planning and producing an advocacy documentary for donors, members, policy makers and the public. Veteran progressive documentary maker Karen Rybold-Chin of On The Earth Productions outlines tools, techniques and story telling secrets for a great documentary.

 

5 – 6 p.m. Who needs CNN? WYOU's Technical Director, Eric Allin, gives technical tips about creating a YouTube channel, setting up Webcasts and streaming video, and choosing the right equipment to get your advocacy “on the air.”

 

6 p.m.  Reception, networking and informal Q&A with instructors, designed to help students with specific questions or projects they may have.

 

Fees:

            All Day $100

            Morning 8:30a.m.-1:15 p.m.  $50

            Afternoon 12:30 p.m. -6 p.m.  $50

           

(All Day includes morning coffee, lunch drinks, reception and a WFS cap! We strongly urge you to consider spending the day with us. The workshops build on each other.)
